Lesson Summary

The Easy Button: Leonardo's Character Reference

What is it?

Leonardo.ai has a dedicated button in the sidebar specifically for this problem. You don't need to type complex codes like `--cref`.

How to Use It

  1. Go to Image Guidance: In the generation sidebar, click the 'Image Guidance' tab.
  2. Upload Image: Drag and drop your mascot image.
  3. Select Type: In the dropdown menu, select 'Character Reference'. This tells the AI specifically to copy the identity (face/body), not just the style.
  4. Generate: Type your prompt for the new scene. The AI handles the rest.

Why choose this?

It is the most visual and intuitive interface for beginners. You can clearly see which image is being used as the reference, and you can toggle it on and off easily.

Mastering Brand Consistency: The Leonardo.ai Native Character Reference Workflow

For years, the "Holy Grail" of AI image generation was consistency. Creating a stunning character once was easy; recreating that exact same character in a different pose, setting, or outfit was nearly impossible without advanced technical knowledge or complex model training. Brands struggled because a mascot that changes its face in every advertisement fails to build trust or recognition. The inability to maintain a persistent visual identity prevented many businesses from fully adopting AI for storytelling.

The native Character Reference tool in Leonardo.ai changes this landscape entirely. It is a specialized "Image Guidance" feature designed specifically to lock onto the facial features and physical identity of a reference image. Unlike standard image-to-image techniques that merely copy composition or color, the Character Reference tool isolates the identity—the "who"—while allowing the prompt to dictate the "where," "what," and "how."

Strategically, this capability transforms your asset pipeline. Instead of hiring a photographer or illustrator for every new campaign, you can develop a virtual brand ambassador or mascot once and deploy them infinitely. Whether you need your mascot holding a holiday gift, working on a laptop, or pointing to a sale banner, the core identity remains stable. This creates a "visual anchor" for your audience, increasing brand recall and allowing for rapid, reactive marketing without the logistical overhead of physical photoshoots.
