9.9.2.7 - The "Bait-and-Switch": An agency pitching you with their Senior Team, then handing your account to a Junior Intern (Difficulty: Advanced | Path: Scale)

Lesson Summary

Sold by Seniors, Serviced by Juniors

The Trap

You get on a sales call with an agency. You talk to the Founder and the Creative Director. They are brilliant. You sign a $5,000/month contract. On the kickoff call, the Founder is gone, and you are introduced to \"Kyle,\" a 22-year-old intern who is now your Account Manager.

The Reality

This is the standard agency business model. Senior time is expensive; junior time is cheap. They hook you with the experts and service you with the learners.

The Defense:

Before signing, ask: \"Who exactly will be touching my account day-to-day? I want to meet them.\" Put it in the contract: \"Strategy meetings must include [Senior Name] at least once a month.\" If they refuse, walk away.

The Agency "Bait-and-Switch": Paying for Masters, Getting Apprentices

The "Bait-and-Switch" is perhaps the most pervasive and frustrating pattern in the professional services industry. It is not always a malicious scam in the traditional sense; rather, it is a structural inefficiency built into the agency business model that directly conflicts with your need for high-level execution. The core mechanism is simple: agencies sell you on their reputation, their case studies, and the brilliance of their leadership team. During the sales process, you speak with the Founder, the Creative Director, or the VP of Strategy. These individuals are articulate, experienced, and deeply knowledgeable. They build trust. Based on this interaction, you sign a premium retainer contract, expecting that level of expertise to be applied to your business day-to-day.

However, once the ink is dry, the reality of agency economics takes over. Senior time is the agency's most expensive asset and is therefore reserved for "high-leverage" activities: sales, business development, and putting out fires. Your account is immediately handed off to an "Account Manager" or "Coordinator"—often a junior employee with less than two years of experience, or sometimes an intern learning on the job. This junior staff member becomes your primary point of contact, the gatekeeper to the senior talent you thought you hired. They relay your messages, execute basic tasks, and "manage" the relationship, but they lack the strategic depth to drive the growth you paid for.

This dynamic creates a profound misalignment of incentives. You are paying a premium rate (often $150-$250 blended hourly rate) for work that is being executed by someone earning $25-$40 per hour. The "margin" between what you pay and who does the work is where the agency makes its profit. While delegation is necessary for any business to scale, the "Bait-and-Switch" crosses the line when the senior strategy you were sold is completely absent from the actual delivery, leaving your account to drift without experienced oversight.
