Lesson Summary

How to Merchandise Your Collections

What is it?

Merchandising is the art and science of how you display products within a collection to maximize sales. It's about controlling the order in which a customer sees your products.

Why is it important?

By default, products are often sorted alphabetically. This is rarely the most effective way to sell. Strategic merchandising allows you to feature your best, most profitable, or most visually appealing products first, grabbing the customer's attention immediately.

How to Change the Sort Order:

On the collection editing page, look for the 'Sort order' dropdown menu in the 'Products' section.

  • Automated Sorting: You can choose from several automated options, such as:
    • Best selling
    • Price: High to Low
    • Price: Low to High
    • Newest / Oldest
Setting it to 'Best selling' is a powerful, datdriven way to automatically feature your most popular items.
  • Manual Sorting: Choose 'Manually' from the dropdown. You can then drag and drop the products in the list into any order you want. This gives you complete creative control.

Expert Merchandising Tactic

Use a manual sort for your most important collections (like your homepage 'Featured' collection). Create a visually appealing flow. Don't put three similar-looking products next to each other. Mix it up to create a 'story' and lead the customer's eye down the page. Place your most profitable 'hero' product at the very top.

1.4.3.4 - How to Merchandise Your Shopify Collections

Merchandising is the strategic art and science of arranging products within your Shopify collections to influence customer behavior, maximize engagement, and ultimately drive higher sales. Just as a physical retail store carefully plans its window displays and shelf layouts to catch a shopper's eye, your digital storefront requires the same level of intentionality. It is not enough to simply upload products and let them fall where they may; you must control the narrative.

Why is this critical for your business? The default sorting behavior in many systems—often alphabetical or by date added—is rarely the most profitable configuration. By taking control of your merchandising strategy, you ensure that your high-margin "hero" products, best-sellers, and visually stunning items are the first things a potential customer sees. This reduces bounce rates, increases the average time spent on site, and directly contributes to a higher Average Order Value (AOV). In a competitive e-commerce landscape, the order in which products appear can be the difference between a bounce and a purchase.

In this masterclass, we will move beyond basic collection creation and dive into the mechanics of visual merchandising on Shopify. You will learn the distinct advantages of manual versus automated sorting and how to apply each strategy effectively based on collection size and purpose. We will explore the psychological principles of visual hierarchy, ensuring that your product grid guides the customer's eye naturally from one item to the next without cognitive friction.
