9.3.2 - Vetting Candidates (Difficulty: Advanced | Path: Scale)

Forensic Analysis of Portfolios: Spotting the Fakes

What is it?

Reviewing a portfolio isn't just looking at pretty pictures; it's verifying authorship. In the age of AI and \"Save As,\" stealing work is rampant. You need to ensure the candidate actually created what they are showing you.

Why is it important?

Hiring someone based on a stolen portfolio leads to disaster. You pay the deposit, and suddenly the quality of work they deliver is terrible compared to the \"samples\" they showed you. You must verify before you pay.

The Verification Checklist:

  • The \"Live Link\" Test: For developers/designers, ask for a live link to the store. If they only send screenshots, be suspicious. Inspect the code or footer to see if their name/agency is credited.
  • Reverse Image Search: Drag their design samples into Google Images. If that logo appears on a \"Free Stock Vectors\" site or another agency's portfolio, you caught a thief.
  • The \"Specific Contribution\" Question: Ask: \"What exactly did you do on this project?\"
Red Flag: \"I did the website.\" (Too vague).
Green Flag: \"I didn't design the logo, but I customized the Shopify Liquid theme and set up the cart drawer.\" (Specific/Honest).

For Developers:

If you aren't technical, ask for their GitHub profile. Even if you can't read code, look at the \"activity graph\" (green squares). If it's empty, they haven't coded in a while.
