The \"Airbnb\" of Computing: RunPod & Vast.ai
What are they?
These are marketplaces that connect people who have idle GPUs (like crypto miners or data centers) with people who need them (you). They are specifically designed for AI.Why use them?
Cost & Speed. You can rent a powerful RTX 4090 (24GB VRAM) for about $0.40 to $0.70 per hour. Setup takes seconds because they use pre-built templates. There are no contracts; you just top up your balance like a prepaid phone.
The Trade-off
Because these are often consumer-grade cards in various data centers, reliability isn't 100%. Sometimes a machine goes offline. This is fine for experimentation or batch jobs, but you wouldn't run a mission-critical bank server here.
Real-Life Example
If you want to fine-tune Llama 3 on your own data, it might take 4 hours. Buying the hardware costs $2,000. Renting it on RunPod for 4 hours costs roughly $3. It's the perfect sandbox.
