7.8 - Cross-Border Taxes (VAT/GST/Sales Tax) (Difficulty: Advanced | Path: Scale)

Cracking the Code: When Do You Need to Register?

What is it?

The European Union requires VAT (Value Added Tax) to be paid on all goods entering the EU, regardless of value. The IOSS (Import One-Stop Shop) is a system that allows you to collect this VAT at checkout for orders under €150, rather than the customer paying it at the door.

Why is it important?

Without IOSS, your customer will likely be hit with a surprise tax bill plus a 'handling fee' from the courier upon delivery. This kills customer loyalty. Registering allows for a smooth delivery experience.

The Rules of the Road:

  • Under €150: You can register for IOSS. You collect VAT at checkout, and the package sails through customs.
  • Over €150: IOSS does not apply. Duties and VAT are usually charged at the border (DAP/DDU), unless you use a DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) carrier service.
  • Registration: As a non-EU business, you typically need an 'intermediary' or fiscal representative to register for IOSS on your behalf.

❌ Common Pitfall

Thinking you can just 'fly under the radar'. Customs digital systems are advanced; if you ship frequently without proper tax codes, packages will be delayed or returned.
