7.5.1.5 - Understanding MCC, Descriptors & Approval Risk (Difficulty: Beginner | Path: Launch)

Lesson Summary

Preventing 'Friendly Fraud' and Bans

What is it?

  • MCC (Merchant Category Code): A 4-digit number that tells the bank what kind of business you are (e.g., 5651 for Clothing Stores).
  • Statement Descriptor: The text that appears on your customer's credit card statement (e.g., SP * YOURSTORENAME).

Why is it important?

  1. Approval Risk: If you sell supplements but select the MCC for 'Bookstores', you will likely be banned for misrepresentation during a review.
  2. Chargebacks: If your descriptor is vague (e.g., 'SP * DAN SMITH LLC') instead of your brand name ('SP * COOL KICKS'), customers won't recognize the charge, assume it's fraud, and file a chargeback. This is called 'friendly fraud'.

How to Fix It:

Go to Settings > Payments > Manage. Ensure your Statement Descriptor matches your domain name or public brand name exactly. It should be instantly recognizable to a customer reviewing their monthly bank statement.

The Silent Killers of Cash Flow: Mastering MCCs and Billing Descriptors to Prevent Bans and Friendly Fraud

In the high-stakes world of digital commerce, your relationship with your payment processor is your most critical lifeline. Yet, most merchants treat their Stripe or PayPal account setup as a mere formality, clicking through default settings without realizing they are defining the "credit score" and "nametag" of their entire business. This lesson dismantles two technical but vital components of that relationship: the Merchant Category Code (MCC) and the Billing Descriptor.

The MCC is a four-digit number that tells the global banking system exactly what you sell. It is not just a label; it is a risk filter. It dictates the interchange fees you pay, the rewards your customers earn, and, most importantly, the scrutiny your account receives from risk algorithms. If you are selling high-risk supplements but are coded as a low-risk bookstore, you are sitting on a ticking time bomb of compliance violations that will eventually lead to a freeze or the dreaded MATCH list (Terminated Merchant File).

The Billing Descriptor is the text that appears on your customer's bank statement after they buy from you. In an era where consumers review their banking apps daily, this text is the difference between a recognized transaction and a "friendly fraud" chargeback. If your store is branded "Cool Kicks" but your legal entity "Smith Holdings LLC" appears on the statement, the customer will not recognize the charge. They will assume their card was stolen, file a dispute, and you will lose the revenue, pay a dispute fee, and damage your standing with the processor.
