What are Core Policies & Notices? (Beginner)

What is it?

These are the legal pages on your store that create a contract between you (the seller) and your customers. They set clear expectations for how your business operates. The 'big four' policies are: Privacy Policy, Terms of Service, Refund Policy, and Shipping Policy.

Why is it important?

This is non-negotiable. These policies are required by law in most countries (like GDPR in Europe and CCPA in California). They are also required by payment processors like Shopify Payments and Stripe. More importantly, they build massive customer trust. A store with no policies looks like a scam.

How to Create Them (The Easy Way):

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Policies.
  2. Shopify has built-in templates for your Privacy Policy, Terms of Service, and Refund Policy. Click 'Create from template' for each one.
  3. READ AND EDIT THEM. This is the step beginners skip. The template is a starting point. You *must* read it and customize the bracketed sections to match your business (e.g., change the number of days for a return).
  4. Write your Shipping Policy from scratch. Be very clear about your production times (e.g., '2-5 business days for printing') and your shipping times ('5-10 business days for shipping').
  5. After saving, go to Online Store > Navigation > Footer menu and add the links so customers can find them.

✅ Do's and ❌ Don'ts

  • Do: Be honest and realistic in your Shipping Policy. Over-estimating your shipping time and delivering early is a 5-star experience. Under-estimating and delivering late is a 1-star review.
  • Don't: Just copy-paste a policy from another website. It might not be compliant, and it's likely copyrighted.
  • Do: Use an AI tool like ChatGPT or Gemini to help. A good prompt is: 'I have a print-on-demand store. Help me draft a clear, simple shipping policy that includes a 3-5 day production time and a 7-14 day shipping time.'
