Gifting vs. Paid Posts: Where’s the Line? (Beginner)
What is it?
Gifting (or 'product seeding') is sending a product to an influencer for free, *hoping* they'll post about it. Paid Posts are a contractual agreement where you pay a fee (or affiliate commission) for *guaranteed* content (deliverables).
The Gray Area & The Risk
The line gets blurry when brands send 'gifts' with heavy-handed 'expectations' that are essentially a contract in disguise. If you gift a product with no strings attached, the influencer has zero obligation to post about it. Many beginners send out hundreds of dollars in free products and get nothing back because there was no agreement.
Strategic Recommendation
- For Gifting (No Guarantee): Use this for smaller influencers or as a genuine 'surprise and delight' tactic to build goodwill. Have zero expectations. If they post, it's a bonus ('earned media').
- For Guaranteed Posts (The Contract): If you *need* a post, you must have a clear agreement. This is a paid post. For micro-influencers, the 'payment' might simply be the free product, but the deliverables (e.g., '1 Reel, 2 Stories') must be agreed upon *before* you ship.
- Disclosure is Still Required: Remember, even if it's 'just a gift', if the influencer *does* post about it, they are still required by the FTC to disclose it (e.g., `#ad` or 'Thanks [Brand] for the gift!').
Common Pitfall
Don't be passive-aggressive. Never send a 'gift' and then email the influencer a week later asking, 'Did you get the product? When are you posting?' This is unprofessional and a fast way to get a bad reputation. If you want a guaranteed post, call it what it is: a paid collaboration and get a clear agreement.
