Lesson Summary

The Consistency King: Midjourney's --cref

What is --cref?

Midjourney introduced a game-changing parameter called Character Reference (`--cref`). It allows you to provide a URL of an image and tell the AI: 'Look at this character and put them in a new situation.' It is far more powerful than just using a seed.

How to Use It

  1. Generate your Hero: Create the perfect image of your mascot. Upscale it.
  2. Get the Link: Right-click the image and select 'Copy Link'.
  3. Prompt New Scene: Type your new prompt (e.g., `/imagine a cute robot eating pizza`).
  4. Add the Tag: At the end of the prompt, type `--cref [PASTE LINK HERE]`.

Mastering the Weight (--cw)

You can control how closely the AI copies the reference using Character Weight (`--cw`) from 0 to 100.

  • `--cw 100` (Default): Copies the face, hair, AND clothes perfectly. Use this if your mascot wears a uniform.
  • `--cw 0`: Copies only the face/head but changes the outfit/body. Use this if you want your mascot modeling different t-shirts or costumes.

Real-Life Example

We created a mascot named 'Captain Cargo' for a logistics store. Using `--cref URL --cw 100`, we generated him driving a truck, holding a package, and pointing at a graph. He looked identical in every shot. When we wanted him to wear a Hawaiian shirt for a summer sale, we used `--cw 0`, and Midjourney kept his face but changed his outfit.

From "Slot Machine" to Strategic Asset: Mastering Identity Persistence with Midjourney's Character Reference Tools

For years, the greatest barrier to adopting Generative AI for serious brand work was the "consistency problem." You could generate a stunning mascot, a perfect fashion model, or a compelling brand ambassador in one image, but the moment you tried to put them in a new scene, they vanished. The AI would generate a similar person, but not the same person. It was like hiring a new actor for every single scene of a movie. For an e-commerce brand building trust, this inconsistency was a dealbreaker. Customers need to recognize your face to trust your voice.

Enter the Character Reference parameter—known as --cref in Midjourney V6 and evolved into the Omni-Reference --oref in V7. This tool fundamentally changes the relationship between the creator and the generator. Instead of rolling dice and hoping for a resemblance, you can now provide a "Source of Truth"—a URL to a reference image—and mathematically instruct the AI to anchor its new generation to the identity features of that source. It allows you to say, "Take this specific character, but show them drinking coffee," or "Show them driving a delivery truck."

This capability transforms AI from a toy into a production engine. Strategically, this means you can create a virtual influencer who posts daily lifestyle content without needing a photoshoot. You can design a brand mascot that appears on your 404 page, your email headers, and your packaging, looking identical every time. You can model your entire t-shirt catalog on the same virtual model, ensuring your product pages look cohesive and professional. This isn't just about saving money on photographers; it's about owning an intellectual property asset that scales infinitely with zero fatigue.
