'The Lazarus Pit': Why Dead Leads Should Stay Dead
What is it?
You find an old spreadsheet of 5000 customers from a business you ran five years ago or maybe a list you bought back in 2019 but never used. You decide to upload these contacts to your new Shopify store's email platform (Klaviyo/Mailchimp) and blast them with your launch offer. You are trying to 'resurrect' dead leads. The Hidden Trap: Spam Traps
This is dangerous because email addresses expire. When people abandon an email address (e.g. old Yahoo or AOL accounts) ISPs (Internet Service Providers) eventually take them over and turn them into Spam Traps. If you send an email to a Spam Trap the ISP knows you are not managing your list and that you lack permission. A single hit can tank your sender reputation instantly. The Consequences
- High Hard Bounce Rate: Many emails will simply fail alerting your email provider (Klaviyo) that your list is low quality. They may suspend your account.
- The Junk Folder: Because your sender score drops your emails to valid new customers will start landing in Spam. You sacrifice your future for the past.
The Correct Way to Re-engage
If the list is yours (not bought) and under 2 years old run a strict Permission Pass.
- Clean the List: Use a tool like NeverBounce or ZeroBounce to remove invalid emails before mailing.
- Send ONE Email: Send a single message asking: 'Do you still want to hear from us?' with a big 'Yes/No' button.
- Delete the Rest: Anyone who doesn't click 'Yes' within 48 hours gets deleted forever. Quality beats quantity every time.
