3.6.4 - Global Compliance: IOSS, HS Codes & Export Docs (Difficulty: Advanced | Path: Scale)

Understanding HS Code Basics & Tools

What is it? A Harmonized System (HS) code is a 6 to 10-digit number used by customs offices worldwide to classify products. Every single item that crosses a border has an HS code. For example, a cotton t-shirt is `6109.10`.

Why is it important? The HS code tells the customs office exactly what your product is. This code determines the duty and tax rate the customer has to pay. Using the wrong code can lead to your customer being overcharged, or the package being delayed or rejected by customs. Providing the code upfront speeds up customs clearance.

How to Find HS Codes

  • Your POD Provider: Good news! Your POD provider (like Printful) knows the HS codes for all their products and automatically includes them on the customs forms they generate for you.
  • Shopify Admin: When adding a product in Shopify, there is a field for 'HS code' under the 'International shipping' section. Shopify's AI can often suggest the correct code based on your product's category.
  • Lookup Tools: If you're shipping products yourself, you can use government websites or third-party tools (like HS code finders) to look up the correct code for your item.

Best Practice

When you add products to your store, take the extra 30 seconds to find and add the correct HS code in the Shopify product admin. This ensures that when an order is created, the correct data is passed to all systems, leading to smoother customs clearance for your international customers.
