What is it?

These are the technical specifications your design file *must* meet to produce a high-quality, professional print. If you get this wrong, your product will look blurry, pixelated, or have an ugly box around it.

Why is it important?

This is the #1 technical mistake beginners make. A design that looks sharp on your screen (which is low-resolution) will look terrible when printed if the file isn't set up correctly. This leads to customer complaints, bad reviews, and lost money.

Your Non-Negotiable File Checklist:

  • File Type: PNG. This is the most important. A PNG file can have a transparent background. A JPEG cannot. If you upload a JPEG with a white background onto a black t-shirt, it will print a big, ugly white box. A PNG will print *only* your design.
  • Resolution: 300 DPI. DPI means 'Dots Per Inch'. Your screen is 72 DPI. Print is 300 DPI. You must set your design canvas to 300 DPI *before* you start designing. You cannot 'upscale' a 72 DPI design and make it high quality.
  • Color Profile: sRGB. This is a common pitfall. You might think print should be CMYK, but POD providers' systems are built to accept sRGB files. They handle the conversion to CMYK on their end. Submitting in CMYK can cause your colors to print incorrectly.
  • File Size: Your file should be large enough to cover the print area. A good rule of thumb is to design on a canvas that is at least 4500 x 5400 pixels at 300 DPI.
