Lesson Summary

How to Connect PayPal and Other Gateways

What are they?

These are 'external' payment providers that work *alongside* Shopify Payments. PayPal is the most essential one. Others, like Amazon Pay, can also be added to give customers more choice.

Why is it important?

Trust and choice. A large percentage of online shoppers, particularly in regions like Germany and the UK, feel more secure checking out with PayPal. They trust its security and enjoy the convenience of not having to type in their credit card. *Not* offering PayPal is a common reason for customers to abandon their carts.

How to Connect PayPal:

  1. Go to Settings > Payments.
  2. In the 'PayPal' section, click Activate PayPal. (This may be under 'Additional payment methods').
  3. You will be prompted to log in to your existing PayPal account and grant permission for Shopify to connect to it.
  4. Crucially: You must have a PayPal Business account. If you only have a Personal account, PayPal will prompt you to upgrade it for free during this setup.

Common Misconception

You don't choose *between* Shopify Payments and PayPal. You should use *both*. Shopify Payments handles all the direct credit card, Apple Pay, and Shop Pay transactions, while PayPal provides a trusted alternative for those who prefer it. They work together perfectly.

How to Connect PayPal and Other Gateways to Shopify

In the digital commerce landscape, trust is the currency that precedes the actual transaction. While Shopify Payments serves as the robust engine room for your store—handling direct credit card processing and integrated wallets like Shop Pay—it is rarely enough on its own to maximize conversion rates globally. This masterclass focuses on the critical "dual-gateway" strategy: integrating external providers, specifically PayPal, to work in harmony with your native checkout flow.

Why is this distinction important? Many new merchants mistakenly believe they must choose between Shopify Payments and PayPal. This is a fundamental error. The most successful stores utilize a layered approach. They offer Shopify Payments for the seamless, on-site credit card experience, and they layer PayPal (and occasionally Amazon Pay or BNPL options) as a trusted alternative. This redundancy does more than just offer choice; it captures the significant percentage of shoppers—particularly in markets like the UK and Germany—who simply will not enter credit card details into a new website they haven't bought from before.

Connecting these gateways involves a different technical process than the native setup. Unlike the direct integration of Shopify Payments, third-party gateways like PayPal operate via an OAuth (Open Authorization) handshake or, in the case of legacy providers, API credential exchange. This lesson demystifies the connection process, ensuring you don't just "switch it on," but that you configure the account permissions, currency settings, and return URLs correctly to prevent "pending" payment errors that kill cash flow.
