1.6.6 - How to Prevent Shopify Discount Abuse (Difficulty: Beginner | Path: Launch)

Understanding Stacking Rules & Cart Conditions

What is it?

'Stacking' refers to whether a customer can use multiple discounts on the same order. Shopify's discount settings give you control over which types of discounts can be combined.

Why is it important?

Without stacking rules, a customer could potentially combine a 20% off code with a 'Buy One, Get One Free' offer and a 'Free Shipping' discount, which could make the order unprofitable for you. These rules prevent unintended 'double-dipping'.

How Stacking Works in Shopify:

In the discount creation page, under the 'Combinations' section, you can choose what other types of discounts your new discount can be combined with.

  • By default, discount codes cannot be combined with other discount codes.
  • You can choose whether a product discount (e.g., 15% off a specific product) can be combined with a shipping discount (e.g., free shipping over $100).
  • You can choose whether an order discount (e.g., $20 off your total order) can be combined with a shipping discount.

Example Scenario:

You are running an automatic 'Free Shipping Over $100' promotion. A customer has $120 worth of products in their cart and also has a 'WELCOME10' discount code for 10% off. You must decide if you will allow them to get *both* the 10% off and the free shipping. By checking the box that allows the order discount to be combined with the shipping discount, you allow this. If you uncheck it, the customer would have to choose which discount they prefer.
