1.5.7 - Shopify Theme Localization for International Sales (Difficulty: Advanced | Path: Scale)

How to Translate Your Content & Media

What is it?

This is the process of converting your store's text and even images into different languages to create a fully native experience for your international markets.

Why is it important?

Customers are overwhelmingly more likely to buy from a store that is in their own language. It builds trust and removes the friction of misunderstanding.

How to Translate Your Store's Content:

The best way to start is with Shopify's free Translate & Adapt app.

  1. First, go to Settings > Languages and add the new languages you want to offer.
  2. Install and open the Translate & Adapt app.
  3. Auto-translate: The app can use machine learning to provide an instant, automatic translation of your entire store. This is a fantastic starting point.
  4. Manually Refine: Machine translation isn't perfect. You can click into any piece of text within the app to manually edit and improve the translation for brand voice and accuracy.
  5. Translate Media: For some markets, you may need to translate text *within* your images (like on a banner). The Translate & Adapt app allows you to upload a different version of an image to be shown only for a specific language.
