How to Create Custom Page Templates

What is it?

This advanced feature allows you to create unique, reusable layouts for specific types of pages, instead of having all your pages look the same.

Why is it important?

Your 'About Us' page should have a different layout and feel than your 'Contact Us' page. Custom templates allow you to design the perfect layout for each page's specific purpose.

How to Create and Assign a Custom Template:

  1. Navigate to Pages in the Editor: In the theme editor, use the dropdown at the top of the screen to navigate to Pages.
  2. Create New Template: Click the Create template button. Give it a descriptive name (e.g., 'My About Page Template') and choose which existing template to base it on. Click 'Create template'.
  3. Build Your Custom Layout: You are now editing this new template file. Add, remove, and reorder sections to create the perfect layout for your page's purpose.
  4. Assign the Template to a Page: Now, go to your Shopify admin and navigate to Online Store > Pages. Open the page you want to apply the new layout to (e.g., your 'About Us' page). On the right side, you'll see a 'Theme template' dropdown. Select the new custom template you just created and click Save.

That specific page will now use your custom design, while all other pages continue to use the default.

Unlock the Power of Bespoke Layouts: Mastering Shopify Custom Templates

Most beginners start their Shopify journey believing that a "Page" is just a container for text. They create an "About Us" page, write a few paragraphs, and hit save. Then, they create a "Contact" page, add a map section, and suddenly realize that the map has appeared on their "About Us" page too. This common frustration stems from a misunderstanding of the relationship between Pages (the content) and Templates (the structure).

In the Shopify ecosystem, a template is the architectural blueprint that dictates how a page looks and functions. By default, every new page you create is assigned to the "Default Page" template. This means if you modify the layout of the Default template—for example, by adding a newsletter signup form or an image gallery—every single page assigned to that template will inherit those changes. This rigid "one-size-fits-all" approach stifles creativity and makes it impossible to build distinct, purpose-driven experiences for your customers.

Custom Page Templates are the strategic solution to this problem. Introduced with robust flexibility in Online Store 2.0, custom templates allow you to create unique layouts for specific scenarios without writing code. You can design a rich, image-heavy template for your "Brand Story," a clean, form-centered template for "Wholesale Inquiries," and a grid-based template for your "Team" page. Each template exists independently, ensuring that changes to one do not accidentally break the others.
