Lesson Summary

How to Set Up Collection Filters

What is it?

Collection filters (also known as faceted search or layered navigation) are the menus you see on the side of a collection page that allow customers to narrow down the products by specific criteria, like price, color, size, or brand.

Why is it important?

For stores with more than a handful of products, filters are essential. They empower customers to quickly find exactly what they're looking for, which dramatically improves the user experience and increases the likelihood of a sale.

How to Enable and Customize Filters:

Shopify's filtering functionality is primarily managed through the Shopify Search & Discovery app, which is free and should be installed on your store by default.

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Apps > Search & Discovery.
  2. Click on Filters in the app's menu.
  3. Add Filters: Click 'Add filter'. You can choose from a list of 'source' data to filter by. Common sources include:
    • Availability (in stock / out of stock)
    • Price
    • Product Type
    • Vendor (Brand)
    • Product Options (e.g., Size, Color)
    • Product Tags
    • Metafields (for advanced filtering)
  4. Customize Labels: You can change the public-facing label for each filter (e.g., change 'Vendor' to 'Brand').
  5. Your filters will now automatically appear on your collection pages (your theme must be an Online Store 2.0 theme for this to work seamlessly).

How to Set Up Shopify Collection Filters

Imagine walking into a massive department store where all the clothes are thrown into a single pile in the center of the room. There are no signs, no racks separated by size, and no sections for men, women, or children. To find a pair of medium-sized blue jeans, you have to dig through thousands of unrelated items. This chaotic experience is exactly what a Shopify collection page feels like without proper filtering. In the digital world, customers do not dig; they bounce.

Collection filters—often called faceted search or layered navigation—are the strategic signposts that bring order to your inventory. They allow your customers to refine a broad list of products (like "All Shoes") into a specific, purchase-ready selection (like "Running Shoes, Size 10, Under $100"). By empowering users to narrow down their choices based on specific attributes like price, availability, color, brand, or even custom technical specifications, you dramatically reduce the friction between discovery and checkout.

For a long time, setting up these filters in Shopify was a complex task requiring messy tag logic or expensive third-party apps. However, with the introduction of Online Store 2.0 and the native Shopify Search & Discovery app, this capability is now built directly into the platform's core. You can now build sophisticated, Amazon-style filtering menus without writing a single line of code, using data that already exists in your product admin.
