1.3.2 - The Print-on-Demand (POD) Model on Shopify (Difficulty: Beginner | Path: Launch)

What is Print-on-Demand (POD)?

What is it?

Print-on-Demand is a type of dropshipping where you partner with a supplier to customize 'white-label' products (like blank t-shirts, mugs, hats, etc.) with your own unique designs. The product is only created *after* a customer places an order.

Why is it great for creators? It allows artists, designers, and influencers to monetize their creativity and audience without any upfront inventory costs or risks. You can launch a full product line with just a set of design files.

The Automated POD Workflow:

  1. You create a unique design (e.g., a logo, illustration, or clever slogan).
  2. Using a POD app (like Printful or Printify), you upload your design onto a blank product in their catalog, creating a virtual 'mockup'.
  3. You publish this unique product to your Shopify store.
  4. A customer buys your custom-designed product.
  5. The order is automatically sent to the POD facility. They print your design on the product, package it (often with your branding), and ship it directly to your customer.

Your only jobs are to create compelling designs and market your store. The entire physical production and shipping process is handled for you.
