Lesson Summary

Why Some Products Don't Appear on a Sales Channel (Beginner)

What is it?

After connecting a new sales channel, you might notice that not all your products are available on it. This is usually due to product eligibility rules and synchronization status.

Why is it important?

Each sales channel has its own set of rules and policies. A product that's perfectly fine for your own website might not be allowed on Facebook or Google. Understanding these rules prevents frustration and helps you manage your listings effectively.

How to Check and Manage Product Availability

You can control which products are available on each channel directly from the product page in your Shopify admin.

  1. Go to Products and select a product.
  2. On the right side of the page, you'll see a 'Publishing' or 'Sales channels and apps' card. Click 'Manage'.
  3. A list of your active sales channels will appear. You can check or uncheck the box next to each channel to make the product available or unavailable there.

Common Reasons for Ineligibility

  • Policy Violations: The product may violate the channel's specific commerce policy (e.g., selling certain supplements on Facebook).
  • Missing Information: The product might be missing required data, such as a barcode (GTIN) for Google Shopping or a detailed product description.
  • Syncing Errors: Sometimes there's a temporary technical glitch. The product might be 'approved' but show an error. We'll cover how to fix this next.

Mastering the Sync: Why Products Get Rejected and How to Fix Them

Connecting a sales channel like Facebook, Instagram, or Google Shopping to your Shopify store is often marketed as a "one-click" magic trick. You install the app, click connect, and expect sales to roll in. However, the reality for most merchants is significantly more complex. Just because a product exists on your Shopify store does not mean it automatically qualifies to be sold on an external platform. Each channel operates as a distinct ecosystem with its own rigid set of commerce policies, data requirements, and technical synchronization rules. The "Sales Channel" infrastructure in Shopify acts as a gatekeeper, pushing data out, but it is the external platform that acts as the judge.

Strategic control over your catalog's visibility is not just a technical necessity; it is a brand safety imperative. When you push products to Meta (Facebook/Instagram), you are subject to their Commerce Policies regarding health claims, adult content, and misleading positioning. When you sync to Google, you are subject to strict data quality standards regarding GTINs (barcodes), shipping information, and price accuracy. Failing to understand these rules doesn't just result in a single product being hidden; it can lead to account-level suspensions that freeze your ability to advertise entirely. A "Rejected" status is a warning shot that many beginners ignore until it is too late.

In this masterclass, we move beyond the simple "Connect" button. You will learn how to audit your product catalog for channel-specific eligibility before you even attempt a sync. We will dissect the difference between a "Publishing Error" (a Shopify-side data issue) and a "Policy Violation" (a channel-side compliance issue). We will explore the mechanics of the synchronization API—how often data updates, why changes on Shopify aren't instant on Instagram, and how to force a refresh when things get stuck.
